Billie Jean King : Tennis Trailblazer (Lerner Biographies)
by Joanne Lannin
The author, Joanne Lannin , September 26, 1999 from Amazon.com,
Why I wrote a book about Billie Jean King
If you are over 35, you probably remember watching the tennis match between Billie Jean King and Bobby Riggs at the Astrodome on Sept. 20, 1973. It was billed as "The Battle of the Sexes" and was viewed by millions of people all over the world. King's gutsy performance changed the way a lot of people thought about women in sports.
I wrote this book for young adults primarily to inform
them about that watershed moment in women's sports. But as I dug deeper into Billie Jean's life, I realized that even if she'd never played Bobby Riggs, her accomplishments in tennis and to women in sports have been huge. Her life is a great example of the power of perseverance and the importance of being true to your self.
This book is listed for 9-12 year-olds but I think any girl or
boy up to age 18 who is interested in tennis or women's sports -- or needs a good topic for a social studies project -- would find this book worth reading. In closing, I'd like to let students and teachers know that I'm available for interviews about the book or the process of writing it. Just email me at
jlannin@pressherald.com.

Although a simple concept, Lightspeed Tennis provides hours of fun. A bridge suspended over a
cardboard, tabletop tennis court projects a laser ball onto the court, and players use reflective rackets to "hit" the laser ball. An umpire with a Wimbledon-like manner informs the players of the score and nature of play. A push-button setting allows for one- or two-person play, one- or three-set matches, and four levels of challenge. The game is surprisingly quick and exciting for an electronic tabletop sport, and will certainly help develop rapid reflexes and teach the basics of
tennis. Highly recommended for cold, rainy afternoons. (Ages 7 and older) --Sandy Hirsch
